YES Prep Ranks in the Top Ten of Houston Chronicle’s Annual School Report Card

April 18, 2011 by Chris Barbic

Yesterday, the Houston Chronicle and Children at Risk released their annual School Report Card. We were thrilled to see that YES Prep Southeast was once again ranked a top ten high school in Houston, placing sixth on the list. YES Prep has been ranked on this list ever since Children At Risk and the Houston Chronicle first teamed up to create it. Starting last year, the rankings also began including the top middle schools in Houston. ALL of our eligible campuses ranked in the top 25—on a list that includes over 265 area schools. We were particularly excited to see our YES Prep Southwest campus ranked 5th on this list. As the national debate about public education and charter schools continues, we were also pleased to see that four of the top ten schools on the list were state and

YES Prep and the Texas Budget Crisis

April 13, 2011 by Ryan Dolibois

It seems that every day  there is a new article or news report about the Texas budget crisis. As the news has highlighted, lawmakers in Austin are currently grappling with a budget shortfall that could be as high as $27 billion for the biennium.  The vast majority of the state budget is allocated to education and health/human services, so cuts to state education funding are inevitable.

Wood & Associates, Texas charter schools annually receive up to $2,000 less per year, per student than traditional school districts across Texas. This means that the proposed budget cuts could affect us even more severely than traditional districts, depending on how

Former Atty. Gen. Alberto Gonzales to Speak at Senior Signing Day

April 12, 2011 by Chris Barbic

former attorney general alberto gonzales at yes prepWe just confirmed that Alberto Gonzales will be delivering this year’s keynote remarks to our seniors at our Senior Signing Day Celebration being held at Rice University’s Tudor Field House on Friday, April 29, 2011. This year promises to be a great one . . . we will have THREE classes of seniors announcing their college plans.

Alberto Gonzalez is a native Houstonian who grew up poor on the Northside, graduated from Rice University, and went on to hold a cabinet level position in President’s Bush’s (43rd) Adminsitration. He will continue the great tradition we established last year in having Education Secretary Arne Duncan as our first-ever SSD speaker. One side note is that General Gonzales actually has spoken and addressed the seniors this past fall during the Senior Summit event

The Strong Should Support the Weak: YES Prep continues its tradition of riding the MS 150 Bike Race

April 11, 2011 by Jeremy Jones

Friends and Family –

THE TRADITION CONTINUES!... 2011 MS150! First of all, I would like to thank all of you who donated to the cause last year. Thanks to you, I was able to give $2000 to the MS Society. Of course, we are back at it again... THE MS150 RIDE to Austin! This is my 11th year riding! Every year has been such an experience-- the cause, the people, the ride. If you can help out in anyway with a donation of any amount, you can feel rest assured that you will be helping thousands of people.

On Saturday and Sunday, April 16 - 17, 2011, I will be joining over 13,000 other cyclists riding 180 miles from Houston to Austin in the annual BP MS 150 Bike Tour. The tour is a charity fundraising event supporting the National MS Society's fight against multiple sclerosis. Not only will
