Gulfton Art Students Explore History through Portraits

For the past few weeks, YES Prep Gulfton High School students have been engaged in a rather new experience for many: creating art. Art I is a new course on the Gulfton campus, but the Force has already proven to themselves and all who see the student samples that what they lack in experience, they make up for in drive.

Gulfton students have been learning the techniques involved in drawing from photos and how to draw the face. With value studies and grid systems clearly mastered, students were given a face to draw. After a thoughtful character study, brush, pen and ink were used to create the portrait. Some of the results are here for you to see. Alumni Spotlight: Lara Autrey-Rodriguez, YES Prep Southeast Class of 2005

Lara Isabel Autrey-Rodriguez graduated from the YES Prep Southeast campus in 2005.  She attended Yale University where she majored in Spanish and graduated in 2009.  Lara is currently a 3rd year law student at the University of Houston Law Center studying Criminal and Immigration Law.

What is your favorite YES Prep memory?

I loved our home basketball and volleyball games at Ripley House.  At the time, YES Prep Southeast had no gymnasium or other indoor practice facilities.  As a result, all of our home games were held at the Ripley House and all practices were held in our parking lot.

YES Prep Southwest Named Blue Ribbon School

YES Prep Southwest was officially announced as a 2011 Blue Ribbon School this past week.   The Department of Education awards the Blue Ribbon distinction to schools that serve as a national model and have dramatically increased student performance.

This award is based on five years of strong academic achievement at YES Prep Southwest. We join YES Prep North Central as the second YES Prep campus to win this award and will definitely not be the last. Any success this campus has been fortunate enough to experience has come on the backs of the YES Prep system as a whole collaborating, sharing resources and ideas, innovating and creating change together.

 YES Prep Southeast Class of 2008 graduate and current Harvard senior, Keara Cormier-Hill, shares how a summer internship set her on a course for a career in non-profits.

When I began college in the fall of 2008, I hoped to pursue a career in journalism or communications after graduation.  However, by the end of my junior year, I realized I had different goals for my immediate future.
