YES Prep North Central Student Is a Semi-Finalist for the Jack Kent Cooke Award

March 03, 2011 by Jeremy Jones

A couple weeks ago, we found out that 7th grader Tyra Williams has moved on to the semi-final round of the Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars competition! To put this into better context, each year, more than 1,000 high-achieving 7th graders nationwide apply for the Young Scholars Program and only approximately 50 students are ultimately selected. Although Tyra has not yet been selected for this prestigious award, this is a huge step toward being selected, and she will spend an upcoming weekend in Washington, DC preparing her final application with 5 other students from YES Prep and Uncommon Schools.

What opportunities and support do Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars receive?
Working together as a team, the Young Scholar, parent or guardian, and a full-time Foundation educational adviser

A Day in the Life of YES Prep Teacher Lindsey Windham

March 01, 2011 by Jeremy Jones

I get asked all of the time about what it is like to work at YES Prep.  My first answer: profound.  It is tremendously humbling to work in my community with students who need access to excellent education and surrounded by amazing people.  To be this young, but to have such a powerful impact is a profound and transformative experience.  I also have the chance to host visitors from time to time or am in the community helping to recruit teachers to join our mission to prepare more low-income students for college graduation.  When talking to people or even when they are visiting, they rarely see the entire picture of what a day looks like for us at YES Prep.  I wanted to share a day in my life.

I wake up around 6 am and get to school around 7 am. If I want to shower and get stuff done

February 28, 2011 by Hope Pacheco

student support counselingA student might walk into their SSCs office for any number of reasons. They might come in after a fight with their parents on the way to school, a break-up with their girlfriend, the death of a relative, the loss of a friendship, the fear of being on RISE for the first time, the list could go on and on. But did you know they also come in to share the name of their new love, to show off their new coin in their coin collection, to talk about the highlights from the movie they saw over the weekend, to share their excitement about the summer program they will be attending or to share their college acceptance letter? What draws a student into their SSCs office changes on an hourly basis, and the SSC is ready for each and every possibility that turns into an opportunity.

I’ve often been
