YES Prep and the Duke Talent Identification Program for students

In the nine years that Lynda Daniel, Student Opportunities Coordinator at YES Prep Southeast, has been working with the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) this year’s results were by far the best. 

  • 25 YES Prep students attended an academic or leadership program at  Duke or Vanderbilt this summer.
  • YES Prep Southeast Students received about $64,000 in scholarships.
  • Our parents paid about $22,000 for their students to attend programs (not counting airfare).

Students can qualify for Duke TIP at the Academy or Center level.  Center requires higher scores.  The Duke TIP Academy prgram is described as "an exceptional academic and social experience for those students who are amongst the top 5% of academically talented students in their grade level. YES Prep Shakespeare Festival

YES Prep Southeast student sings during the shakespear festivalOn Thursday night, May 27th, the scene was set.  Over one hundred chairs were waiting by the stage.  The microphones were ready to go.  Props were arranged artfully on stage: swords, windows, hats, and fake blood.

The boiling sun was starting to set over the east end of Houston.  The medals glistened in the waning sun, and the plaques waited for the students to claim them.  At our first annual YES SEE Shakespeare Festival, over ten acting companies—comprised of over forty students--from both YES Prep East End and Southeast ninth grade English classrooms performed Romeo and Juliet scenes and speeches to the delight of fellow students, teachers, and family members.  The Bard would have been proud!

Check out this summer school: YES Prep Southeast summer ops take kids into space

YES Prep has always ensured that our students are staying occupied in quality summer activities that allow them to explore new opportunities and build their leadership skills.  Here is a sample of what YES Prep Southeast students are up to this summer!

Duke Talent Identification Program Twenty four students will be attending a three week Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program) enrichment program this summer and for these programs they have received over $63,000 in scholarship money. Our students will be attending programs at Duke, University of Kansas, University of Georgia, Texas A&M, Trinity University, Georgia O’Keefe’s former ranch in New Mexico and Appalachian State University. One eleventh grader, Ayari Cruz, landed a spot in the coveted film program at Chapman University. Tenth graders attending are: Juan

YES Prep Southwest Student will attend School for Ethics and Global Leadership in Washington DC

YES Prep Southwest Sophomore, Sergio Veldanez was just admitted to the School for Ethics and Global Leadership in Washington DC for the Fall semester of his Junior year. This is a pretty astounding accomplishment as he will be one of 32 students from across the nation taking part in this program whose unique curriculum emphasizes ethical thinking, leadership development, and international affairs. He will be staying in a residential facility that is a brick townhouse one block from the Supreme Court and Senate Office buildings.

YES Prep North Central Senior is a 2010 Dell Scholarship Winner

YES Prep North Central Senior and Dell Scholarship Winner Fernando LunaI’m thrilled to announce that Fernando Luna, YES Prep North Central Senior, was awarded the 2010 Dell Scholarship!  This is an incredible achievement for Fernando and all of the people that have helped him get to where he is today.  Here are the stats: 

 

 

·         Over 5,300 applications were submitted and from there 924 semifinalists were named

·         Of the 924 selected semifinalists, 810 submitted required follow-up materials to be eligible for scoring by the committee

·         From the 810 reviewed (14 of which were from YES Prep), 300 were selected (2 from the Southeast Campus and 1 from the North Central Campus)

·         Overall, 5.7% of applicants received the Dell Scholarship!
