YES Prep Southeast Ranks in Houston’s Top Ten High Schools

YES Prep First graphicYES Prep's flagship campus, Southeast, is consistently ranked among the best schools in the country.  Children At Risk just released the Houston high school rankings for 2010 and YES Prep Southeast ranks number six along with some pretty amazing company.  YES Prep Southeast ranked 17th in the entire state of Texas.  Congratulations to the students, staff and families of YES Prep Southeast for all of your accomplishments this year and for this prestigeous ranking. 

This is the fourth year in a row that YES Prep Southeast has been ranked in the Top 10 in Houston. This is a HUGE accomplishment, especially for our staff members that have been at Southeast since 2008 since the rankings are based on 2008 data. The ranking looked at the following indicators . . .

YES Prep’s Liz Benevidez battles cancer with her bike pedals in the MS 150

YES Prep Southeast staff member Liz Benevidez is a critical part of the YES Prep team and family.  Having already lost her daughter to cancer and battling cancer herself, she is determined to live the most fulfilling life she can.  Local 2 KPRC news recently featured her story.

“YES and KIPP don’t have a patent on those strategies,” says HISD Super. Grier

 If you didn’t read the press release from HISD last week, the school board approved a pilot program that will require low-performing schools to adopt an extended-year calendar beginning in the fall. The Superintendent also said he plans to ask teachers and principals to reapply to work at the campuses to ensure top-notch instruction during the longer year.

“It's not just about time,” Grier said. “It's not about doing the same thing the same way and expecting different results.”

YES Prep Students Cheer Houston Marathoners

“We are a family-oriented school,” is a saying that can be found hanging in the hallways (or, in some cases, outdoor walkways) of every YES Prep campus.Jump up for the marathoners It is one of the tenets of our organization, drafted and approved by some of the earliest young dreamers to find an excellent education and a chance at a different life. It is a code that we live by.

Houston Marathon Pack LeadersBut after teaching for a couple of years for this dynamic organization, sometimes I feel like the saying should read a little differently. Omit a few choice words, and it reads, “We are family.”

And this is what we truly are.
