People are the source of our strength. This mantra has been a part of the YES Prep Core Values for as long as I have been with YES Prep (which in teacher years is at least 47). It took me until this year and working so closely with the College Initiatives team at YES Prep Southwest that I realized why this is the foundation of our organization.

I have decided to make it official. Senior Signing Day is now a national holiday. I haven’t actually gotten this approved by anyone but I have emailed the President, so I’ll let you know when I find out more. Given that I look forward to SSD more than my own birthday, I’ve decided it needs to take its place as a fully recognized holiday. In fact, as I was heading to SSD on Friday, I started making a list of my favorite days every year. It was crazy to realize that next to Christmas and Thanksgiving, SSD is arguably my favorite day of the year. Of course, the last day of school is a close 4th.
For those of you that have never attended a Senior Signing Day, you should put next year's event on your calendar. Senior Signing Day started as a way to honor our graduating seniors for the

A Monday morning for the seniors and college counselors in the last weeks of April and heading into May can bring stress. This was not the case for three YES Prep Southeast seniors who were able to sneak away from campus for a few hours for a great reason – to be honored by the Assistance League of Houston as scholarship recipients for the 2011 school year.

Representing 18 total scholarship recipients awarded between $1,000-$2,000 this year, Olga Hernandez, Veronica Martinez and Ulises Mercado attended the yearly ALH Scholarship Breakfast to receive this great honor and reward of their hard work.
Below is a little more information about each of the

We just confirmed that Alberto Gonzales will be delivering this year’s keynote remarks to our seniors at our Senior Signing Day Celebration being held at Rice University’s Tudor Field House on Friday, April 29, 2011. This year promises to be a great one . . . we will have THREE classes of seniors announcing their college plans.
Alberto Gonzalez is a native Houstonian who grew up poor on the Northside, graduated from Rice University, and went on to hold a cabinet level position in President’s Bush’s (43rd) Adminsitration. He will continue the great tradition we established last year in having Education Secretary Arne Duncan as our first-ever SSD speaker. One side note is that General Gonzales actually has spoken and addressed the seniors this past fall during the Senior Summit event
