YES Prep Southwest College Counselor Spends Summer in Africa

yes prep southwest teacher and texas aggie doctoral student spends summer in africaFive years ago I began my PhD program in Urban Education at Texas A& M University. I breezed through my coursework,  but found myself struggling to write my dissertation as I often battled with the  typical symptoms of writer’s block,  coupled with my demanding, yet always rewarding, job as the Director of College Counseling at YES Prep Southwest.   My advisor and committee co-chair, Dr. Chance Lewis  frequently expressed his disappointment in my lack of focus. He knew that I had not yet tapped into my potential as a researcher and a scholar, and he often challenged me to push past my fears.  As much as I inspire and encourage my own students, it was very difficult for me to  inspire myself to write and graduate.

YES Prep Sends 143 Alumni to College

YES Prep North Central Alumni going to collegeI must have driven this same route to the North Central campus several hundred times the last few years from my house:  Interstate 45 to 59 North, exit Lauder.   On so many occasions, I’m usually awashed in a midst of phone calls, listening to sports radio or just zoning to good music – it’s become a routine.   However, last Thursday was different than all the other times I have taken this road very travelled.   In fact, it was a historic day – the North Central campus would be hosting their first-ever Alumni Send-Off, a time-honored tradition where we have one last “celebration” and “farewell charge” to the graduated seniors before they head off to their colleges all across the country.
