Inspired by a quote from Jim Collins, author if Good to Great, YES Prep Southwest (AKA Southbest) School Director Chris Claflin wrote this letter to his staff in closing of the 2009-2010 school year.
"Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice and discipline."
In reflecting on the remarkable achievements of this year it is safe to say that we have pushed ahead from simply being a good school to setting our trajectory to being a GREAT school. I say setting our trajectory because greatness is not a tangible peak that we can touch the top of and say ‘Done, we reached it’. (Unlike the Class of 2015 who this week touched the pyramid monument on top of Guadalupe Peak, 8751 feet above sea level and 3000 feet above the

Did you know that the best predictor of college success is the level of mathematics reached by High School students? According to research by the U.S. Department of Education, the math course content, more than any other subject area, provides the most accurate prediction of college success. This is one of the many reasons that teaching High School Mathematics at YES Prep is the most exciting and important job you can pursue. I currently teach AP Calculus at YES Prep North Central and I am also the Math Content Specialist who manages the Math program for the entire YES Prep system. Every day, I am psyched up about the work we do with our students. We take rigorous Math preparation for all students very seriously here at YES Prep. We know that our work will matter tremendously in the

YES Prep's flagship campus, Southeast, has many long and proud traditions. They are typically known as the "artsy" kids of the system, allowed to grow, foster and celebrated as individuals. They are also still proud of their designation of the F1RST. They sent 100% of their graduating seniors to college for nine years before the next campus, YES Prep North Central, followed in kind. They have a rich tradition of amazing and quirky teachers. Despite other campuses having their own school building, YES Prep Southeast still takes pride in the fact that they attend class in trailors, a sure sign that they don't need nice rooms to perform well in school. All of these things and many others have contributed to a unique feeling at YES Prep Southeast. They are kind of the cool older

On Friday, May 14th, Alec Bass, an information security professional who has worked in the industry for 30 years, gave a presentation to my Computer Science and AP Computer Science students. He talked to them about the various careers available in information security and what each one entailed. He talked about the skill sets important to the field, and the training and education one needed to be successful. He described a day on the life of an information security professional.
This is the kind of opportunity we love to offer to YES Prep students – a chance to see real-world relevance of their studies and investigate a rich and diverse set of career opportunities. One thing made this presentation different from any we had previously offered. Mr. Bass spoke to us from his office in
