YES Prep has always ensured that our students are staying occupied in quality summer activities that allow them to explore new opportunities and build their leadership skills. Here is a sample of what YES Prep Southeast students are up to this summer!
Twenty four students will be attending a three week Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program) enrichment program this summer and for these programs they have received over $63,000 in scholarship money. Our students will be attending programs at Duke, University of Kansas, University of Georgia, Texas A&M, Trinity University, Georgia O’Keefe’s former ranch in New Mexico and Appalachian State University. YES Prep's flagship campus, Southeast, has many long and proud traditions. They are typically known as the "artsy" kids of the system, allowed to grow, foster and celebrated as individuals. They are also still proud of their designation of the F1RST. They sent 100% of their graduating seniors to college for nine years before the next campus, YES Prep North Central, followed in kind. They have a rich tradition of amazing and quirky teachers. Despite other campuses having their own school building, YES Prep Southeast still takes pride in the fact that they attend class in trailors, a sure sign that they don't need nice rooms to perform well in school. On Friday, May 14th, Alec Bass, an information security professional who has worked in the industry for 30 years, gave a presentation to my Computer Science and AP Computer Science students. One thing made this presentation different from any we had previously offered. Mr. Bass spoke to us from his office in

99 ninth graders, 10 teams, 6 weeks, 2 shows, 2 musical numbers , 1 English class = 12th Night or…Whatever.
Each year, the 9th grade English class at YES Prep Southwest puts on a production of a full-length Shakespearean play directed by their teacher, Ms. Hunter.
This year, the largest 9th grade class ever comes together to present an adapted version of the Shakespearean comedy, Twelfth Night.
All students are assigned to various teams based on their interests: Advertising, Costumes and Make-up, Set Design, Tech Support, Actors, Special Performers, etc.
The 9th grade play is easily the most-anticipated event at YES Prep Southwest. It is the culminating product of a unit of study centered on literary analysis, elements of drama, and the life and work of William Shakespeare.

YES Prep Southwest Sophomore, Sergio Veldanez was just admitted to the School for Ethics and Global Leadership in Washington DC for the Fall semester of his Junior year. This is a pretty astounding accomplishment as he will be one of 32 students from across the nation taking part in this program whose unique curriculum emphasizes ethical thinking, leadership development, and international affairs. He will be staying in a residential facility that is a brick townhouse one block from the Supreme Court and Senate Office buildings.
