Houston Leadership for Tomorrow (HLT), an MLT affiliate, today announced the selection of its seventh class of HLT Emerging Leaders. The 59 Emerging Leaders in the HLT Class of 2012 include members of the Mayor’s Youth Council, Eagle Scouts actively serving the Houston community through their service projects, young social entrepreneurs who have developed programs on their campuses to address the needs of the less fortunate, and a student who spent her junior year studying in Taiwan. The class also includes recipients of prestigious awards including National Honor Society, Microsoft Blink Website Design Competition State Grand Prize, the President’s Education Award, and the President’s Volunteer Service Awards.
“I am excited to offer these outstanding young people the opportunity to participate in HLT’s unique leadership development experience. I look forward to watching them follow in the footsteps of the nearly 300 HLT alumni who are now college students or recent graduates on the path to becoming our future business and civic leaders”, said HLT Executive Director Barbara Paige.
The HLT Emerging Leaders were selected by a rigorous application and interview process. They represent 25 public schools in 8 districts plus 5 private and 2 charter schools in the Houston region.
Since 2005, Houston Leadership for Tomorrow has been transforming the lives of Houston’s best and brightest African American, Hispanic and Native American high school seniors by developing their leadership potential, increasing their knowledge and awareness of local careers and industries, and providing career, college and personal skill development. HLT alumni are equipped with the skills to position themselves for acceptance by prestigious colleges and universities, career opportunities, and civic engagement in Houston.
The program begins in the summer with an eight-day Leadership Summit that allows seniors from Houston’s public, charter and private high schools to participate in skill building workshops, learn about Houston’s challenges and opportunities from business and civic leaders, explore career opportunities, and build a high-performing peer network while experiencing campus living.
