YES Prep Southwest State of the Seniors Speeches

September 11, 2010 by Jeremy Jones

This week in YES Prep Southwest Senior English teacher Faith Hunter's classes the Seniors delivered their State of the Senior Class speeches. Below are additional snippets from these great orations!

"‘A sympathetic friend can be quite dear as a brother’, the great Homer once said. We began as friends and have now grown to be brothers. So I challenge you today. I challenge you to go forward and consciously make an effort to make all forty six of your brothers and sisters feel

like a brother or sister that has your support. Though we may fight like brothers and sisters at times, siblings never give up on each other." – Ruby Serrano

"This is our school…et’s own our campus. Ask not what your school can do for you—but ask what you can do for your school." – Jairus Coleman

"Over time the change will become evident, and students will begin to look up to us, as role models now more than ever before. If all the students become more united, then the small percentage of problems we have such as gang representation and possession of drugs will no longer be existent. Actions as small as having a conversation with younger students can have extremely beneficial results in the end." – Leyda Valdez

"Struggling has been a commonality that we have all shared, but succeeding and getting past our struggles has been greater commonality that has unified us all. Each and every one of us in this room has worked extremely hard to get to where we are …It is our time to take the responsibility that we are entitled to and hold it for what it’s worth. It is our time to wow students and teachers with our legacy that will be remembered and significant til’ the end of times." – Lariza Contreras
