YES Prep Southwest Senior Thanks Her Mom For the Support at Partnering For Change Town Hall

I didn't understand the benefits of a higher education. But YES changed everything. It changed the way I viewed college through introducing me to a plethora of colleges and universities.

YES Prep is more than Youth Engaged In Service. I have found that it is a community of teachers, students and parents who support each other to do whatever it takes to reach our goals and to give 110% everyday.

While at YES Prep, I quickly learned that nothing is easy. There is rigorous coursework and very long hours of homework every night, but with my determination and dedication, I will graduate from one of the top high schools in the nation this upcoming June. My teachers have never allowed me to settle for less by making sure that I am always doing my absolute best. What more can a student ask for when their teachers dedicate many after school hours and weekends to tutorials, and have cell phones for their students to reach them on?

Although my teachers have been there for me during my entire time at YES Prep, there is one person who's support cannot be topped. That person is my mom. My mom is there for me when I ask for help and even when I don't. She is that fire under me that pushes me to do even better day after day. If my mom was not as supportive as she is, I would not have been anywhere near as determined and focused on my education as I am now. I always see my mom on campus giving a helping hand, whether it would be simply saying "hello" to people or planning teacher luncheons.

From the teachers who are my second parents, and the students who are my brothers and sisters, YES Prep Southwest is my home away from home. If it weren't for these individuals and most importantly, my mom, I would not have been the independent, proud, college-bound young lady that I am this very day.

This speech was delivered by YES Prep Southwest Senior and soon-to-be Creighton University freshman Jasmine Know at the Partnering For Change event in Houston last week.
