99 ninth graders, 10 teams, 6 weeks, 2 shows, 2 musical numbers , 1 English class = 12th Night or…Whatever.
Each year, the 9th grade English class at YES Prep Southwest puts on a production of a full-length Shakespearean play directed by their teacher, Ms. Hunter.
This year, the largest 9th grade class ever comes together to present an adapted version of the Shakespearean comedy, Twelfth Night.
All students are assigned to various teams based on their interests: Advertising, Costumes and Make-up, Set Design, Tech Support, Actors, Special Performers, etc.
The 9th grade play is easily the most-anticipated event at YES Prep Southwest. It is the culminating product of a unit of study centered on literary analysis, elements of drama, and the life and work of William Shakespeare. Students spend weeks considering essential questions such as, “How is classic literature relevant today?” and “In what ways do people disguise themselves? What is the effect of doing so?”
This year’s production is biggest ever!
It features sensational actors, modern-minimalist set design, and special musical numbers (Think Glee)!
Due to popular demand, there will be two showings.

Faith Hunter came to YES Prep Southwest in the fall of 2005. She taught 6th grade ELA for 2 years, and is in her 3rd year teaching 9th grade English. Moving on to teach 12th grade English in the fall, she looks forward to the opportunity to teach some of her former students, the first graduating class of Mavericks. The Arkansas-native is a mother, avid reader and lover of multicultural arts. Ms. Hunter hopes to establish a performing arts department at the Southwest campus in the near future.
