YES Prep Southwest Alumna, Crystal Usoro, Welcomes New Teachers to YES Prep

July 05, 2011 by Tenesha Villanueva

YES Prep will welcome a strong force of new and veteran teachers later this month.  This is the first of 3 letters from YES Prep alumni, welcoming new teachers into the YES Prep family:

Dear New Teachers,

Welcome to the YES Prep family! My name is Crystal Usoro and I am a graduate of YES Prep Southwest’s Class of 2011. As a member of the newest alumni class, I am excited to share my experiences with you and offer some advice from a student’s perspective.

I came to YES Prep in 2004, the year the Southwest campus opened. I had no idea what I was getting myself into by signing the contract Mr. Claflin placed in front of me during my home visit. You may feel the same way. You are about to enter an unfamiliar environment with new expectations and different teaching styles. However, you will soon come to love driving to your respective YES Prep campus each day, just as I did.

My goal of going to college was only part of why I continued to come back morning after morning; it was also the sense of pride I felt seeing the “Maverick Nation” sign along the portable building. I knew I was part of something special. Though there were many times I questioned whether spending late hours on homework or participating in longer school days (than my friends zoned to our neighborhood high school) was worth the sacrifice, I stuck through.  It was not easy being a YES Prep student, but every sacrifice I made was worth it!

Your job as a teacher at YES Prep will not be easy either.  I currently have a summer job as a tutor and one thing that I realized by the end of my first week was how much work goes into teaching.  I appreciate, understand and applaud teachers around the globe for their hard work and dedication! I also appreciate that you have made this decision to join my YES Prep family and teach the leaders of tomorrow. I encourage you to stick through the hard times and the doubts.  It will be worth it all!

If I were asked what makes a YES Prep teacher different from any other teacher, I would answer, “Patience and Passion!". Patience is key when dealing with youth. We can be tough to handle at times!   No matter how much I wanted an A+ in a class, I would not put in the effort if I felt that a teacher was not passionate about teaching me. I cannot think of a teacher at YES Prep who is not patient and passionate with his or her students.  So I say, be patience with us, and be sincerely passionate about your job as a teacher and you will get positive results from your students.

On behalf of the entire YES Prep family, I would like to thank you in advance for all the dedication and hard work you will be contributing into this family. Just know that you are greatly appreciated and that we applaud you. Thank you.

 Sincerely,

Crystal Usoro
