Last year, the 2009 Wizard Cross Country Teams won four District Titles (Boys Varsity, Girls Varsity, JV Boys, and MS Boys) en route to having two athletes qualify for the Texas State Cross Country Meet. Senior Metzli Rivera became the first female Wizard to EVER run at State, finishing 64th with a time of 13:21. Senior Edgar Umanzor finished 13th in the State, with a school fastest time of 17:09 for the course. Seventh grader Joe Balderas led the MS Wizards to victory with a stunning first place individual finish over rival YES Prep East End.
This year, the Wizards are rebuilding but refusing to concede anything to the teams of our district! Our goals are to win six District Titles, finish in the Top Three in our Region for the Boys and Girls teams, qualifying our teams for the State Meet. With the leadership of junior Captains Juan Rangel and Miguel Bermudez for the Boys and junior Elizabeth Gonzalez and sophomore Paloma Mendoza for the Girls, over 49 middle and high school runners are PAYING THE PRICE every morning at six a.m. on the circle track outside the Rec Center. Other runners include Lorraina Perez, Joselyn Guevara, and Nina Nguyen for the girls; Julian Rincones, Armando Sanchez, Rafael Trevino, Jonathan Cruz, and Fernando Portillo for the boys.
Our Middle School Boys team, led by Joe Balderas, Ramon Jasso, Manuel Galvan, Enrique Sanchez, among others has the POTENTIAL to be a dominant force in MS races, perhaps even going undefeated or close to it if they put their mind to it. They are joined by many, many new runners.
Our MS Girls team is in its first year as a complete group, and led by a talented, hard-working group of seventh graders including Jasmine Campuzano, Ariadna Labra, Gaby Tapia, Jayme Mendez, and Michelle Rodriguez; we look forward to seeing how successful they can become. The sky is the limit!
Please come join us at our first meet on Saturday morning August 21st at Buffalo Bayou Park (Memorial and Shepherd), right across the street from St. Thomas High School. Be sure to get there early to see the Girls Varsity compete starting at 7:45 a.m. We will run all races. Wizard Cross Country: Be a part of something great!
