YES Prep Southeast is pleased to announce that Class of 2011 senior, Victoria Gonzalez, was recently named a Dell Scholar and Terry Foundation Scholar!
The Dell Scholars Program, supported by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, is a unique scholarship and college persistence program that looks beyond academic performance to recognize students on the basis of individuality, unique experiences, willingness to work hard and ability to overcome obstacles and adverse circumstances. In addition to providing financial assistance, the Dell Scholars Program is designed to support students in achieving success through college graduation.
Each Dell Scholar receives a computer, printer and $20,000 to be used for tuition, fees, books, and room and board over the course of six years. The program also provides an online community for mentoring and peer interaction. The Dell Scholars program has an 85% college graduation rate among its scholars, well above the national average of 23% for low-income, underserved students. Over the past seven years, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation’s Dell Scholars Program has awarded a total of $37 million to 1,850 scholars.
Victoria has been selected as a Terry Foundation Scholar at University of Houston. The Terry Foundation’s goal is to improve and develop the State of Texas by providing financial assistance for Texas students to attend the state’s finest public universities. The Foundation hopes that these students will have a significant impact on the future leadership of the state and nation. To achieve this goal, the Foundation awards full scholarships to students who meet the high standards set by the Founders. Competition is keen and receiving such recognition speaks volumes about Victoria’s commitment to academic excellence, leadership and service throughout her time here at YES Prep.
Congratulations, Victoria! These accomplishments are well deserved.
