YES Prep's flagship campus, Southeast, is consistently ranked among the best schools in the country. Children At Risk just released the Houston high school rankings for 2010 and YES Prep Southeast ranks number six along with some pretty amazing company. YES Prep Southeast ranked 17th in the entire state of Texas. Congratulations to the students, staff and families of YES Prep Southeast for all of your accomplishments this year and for this prestigeous ranking.
This is the fourth year in a row that YES Prep Southeast has been ranked in the Top 10 in Houston. This is a HUGE accomplishment, especially for our staff members that have been at Southeast since 2008 since the rankings are based on 2008 data. The ranking looked at the following indicators . . .
Percentage of 11th-graders scoring at the "commended" level on all TAKS tests
Percentage of graduates earning a recommended diploma
Percentage of students who completed and received credit for and AP, IB, or dual-credit course
Percentage of 11th and 12th graders taking at least on AP or IB exam
Percentage of students who passed an AP or IB exam
Overall student attendance for the school year
Graduation rate calculated by Children At Risk, looking at percentage of first-time freshman who graduated within four or six years of entering 9th grade
Percentage of students who took SAT and/or ACT
Average score for students taking the SAT and/or ACT
Percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced-price lunch

This year Children At Risk also ranked area middle schools. Here are the indicators used to create rankings. Again, the data is from 2008:
Percentage of 8th graders scoring commended on each section of TAKS ((reading, math, social studies, and science)
Percentage of 8th graders who scored commended on ALL sections of TAKS
Percentage of 7th graders scoring commended on TAKS writing
Overall student attendance for school year
Percentage of students retained in 7th and 8th grade
Percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced-price lunch
YES Prep had three schools eligible for the middle school ranking; Southeast, North Central, and Southwest. Here is how our middle schools and our friends at KIPP fared:
Southwest ranked 15, (52nd in state)
North Central ranked 37, (157th in state)
Southeast ranked 43, (186th in state)
KIPP
KIPP MS ranked 7th (22nd in state)
and KIPP 3D ranked 21st (75th in state).
While our work this year won’t be included in these rankings until next year, I found it reassuring to know that we are focusing on the right criteria to provide the best education in the city of Houston. From attendance incentives to our focus on commended scores, we are on the right track to improving our ranking in the future. Our focus will always be on college success and not local rankings, but this year’s rankings for our middle school and high school are also remainders that we can never forget our core value of continuous improvement. This definitely provides some motivation for us to finish the year strong.
