“17… 16… 15… 14…” began the countdown – an odd number choice to start with, yes… but representative of the guests of honor: YES Prep South’s class of 2017. On Tuesday, 24 August 2010, over three hundred students, parents, siblings, and teachers gathered at the India House on West Bellfort St. to celebrate a YES Prep tradition – when new sixth grade students have earned their uniform shirts and can now represent their school.
“… 13… 12… 11… 10…” Parents of students brought in delicious appetizers, entrees, snacks, and deserts which made apparent one of YES Preps Thinks and Acts: “We are a family-oriented school.” Seventh graders volunteered their time to make sure the ambience was just right, hanging crimson colored streamers, setting up a crimson inspired buffet line and distributing crimson colored glow sticks to siblings.
“… 9… 8… 7… 6…” Mr. Rideaux, YES Prep South’s School Director, commanded the stage in his signature Cavalier hat – garnished by a crimson feather. After welcoming all of our parents and guests, the teachers were introduced, followed by a few words from Jason Bernal and then an explanation of the whole process. Our students went for a solid three weeks wearing only white shirts. Why such a long time? Our students truly wanted to earn the right to be called Cavaliers and so they took their time to learn the procedures and to respect Wall Street. When sixth grade science teacher and Grade Level Chair, Ms. Brake, mentioned Wall Street, the students groaned but also chuckled – because now they are a part of an elite circle of students in Houston who are committed to doing whatever it takes to succeed.
“… 5… 4…. 3… 2… 1” Go ahead class of 2017, and put on your crimson shirts. Welcome to the YES Prep family and welcome to the Cavalier family. 2010 is going to a great year for all of us at the South. Come by and check us out at our new building at 9000 W. Bellfort in October!
