When you have a chance to stop by the gorgeous YES Prep Revolution Campus, don’t be surprised if a YES Prep South student greets you in Chinese, saying “huan1yin2 lai2dao4 YES Prep South, Wo3 jiao4 Jose”, which means “ Welcome to YES Prep South! My name is Jose”. While Chinese is open mainly to high school students and/or the kids from middle or upper-middle class families, YES Prep South is offering Chinese as an elective to all of our 6th graders. We are providing the learning opportunities to our students that they would otherwise not have.
All the YES Prep South 6th grade students rotate in six electives, including Chinese, French, Spanish, Technology, Karate and P.E. The Chinese elective is an intro Chinese class. Within the 6 weeks in Chinese, students are exposed to the Chinese pronunciation and writing systems, as well as Chinese culture, such as Chinese calligraphy, and Chinese New Year. They also get the chance to learn basic conversations in Chinese. The purpose of the Chinese elective class is to help the students get interests in Chinese language and culture and also to set up a good foundation for their next year’s credited Chinese class as a seventh grader.
Want to know more about what the 6th Grade YES Prep South students are doing in their Chinese class? Stay in tuned with us.
