YES Prep Rewards High-Performing Teachers

February 10, 2010 by Jeremy Jones

The Houston Chronicle's article, "Districts consider ending salary perk for teachers," discusses schools that are rewarding teacher's success in the classroom over holding a master's degree. YES Prep currently pays teachers with master's degrees 3% more than teachers with a bachelor's. But YES Prep is looking to change this model through our developing program, the Teacher Career Continuum. This model is not a "pay for performance," but a compensation system that is matched where teachers are along a developmental continuum. In most school district salary scales, a teacher is compensated by tenure and advanced education, regardless of their success. YES Prep wants to provide teachers who have the passion and ability to advance their students with a better salary.

Read the Chronicle's article and tell us how you think teachers should be paid.

But with money tight, a handful of districts are considering ditching the traditional salary bump for teachers with master's degrees in favor of pay based more on student learning... The top-rated YES Prep charter school chain is among those looking to experiment.

Research confirms what leaders of the YES Prep charter schools in Houston have seen in the classroom. About 11 percent of the teachers there have a master's.

“In our experience, even teachers without master's degrees have been able to have a significant impact on student achievement,” said YES Prep spokeswoman Jill Willis.

The charter school chain plans to drop its guaranteed 3 percent pay bump for the degree in the next year or two.
