YES Prep North Central Student Is a Semi-Finalist for the Jack Kent Cooke Award

March 03, 2011 by Jeremy Jones

A couple weeks ago, we found out that 7th grader Tyra Williams has moved on to the semi-final round of the Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars competition! To put this into better context, each year, more than 1,000 high-achieving 7th graders nationwide apply for the Young Scholars Program and only approximately 50 students are ultimately selected. Although Tyra has not yet been selected for this prestigious award, this is a huge step toward being selected, and she will spend an upcoming weekend in Washington, DC preparing her final application with 5 other students from YES Prep and Uncommon Schools.

What opportunities and support do Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars receive?
Working together as a team, the Young Scholar, parent or guardian, and a full-time Foundation educational adviser develop an Individual Learning Plan tailored to the student’s talents, educational goals, and financial situation. Each Young Scholar receives a unique combination of opportunities that may include:

  • Guidance in selecting a high school and, if necessary, support in applying to a private or magnet high school;
  • Summer academic or enrichment programs;
  • Computers, software, or other learning technology;
  • Specialized support in music, art, science, math, or other subjects;
  • Connection with a nationwide community of Young Scholars;
  • Resources for career exploration and mentorship;
  • College advising and counseling.
