Debbie Guelzow, an art instructor at North Central, had her students create art inspired by the children’s book author and illustrator Eric Carle.  Their art depicted butterflies and insects, just as Carle’s work often features insects and other animals.  Manuel Munoz, also an art instructor at North Central, had his students work with watercolors to create whimsical and realistic depictions of butterflies and insects.

At East End (under the direction of Allison Weaver) and at Southeast (under the direction of Jennifer Crancer and Tara Johnson), students work in a variety of media to relate their art to butterflies or insects.  Often students chose the realistic route, but many students also choose to show symbolism in their work.

On the evening of Tuesday, May 17thYES Prep and the Cockrell Butterfly Center hosted an opening reception for students, their families, and staff.  An East End parent said, “This is such a great opportunity for our students and such great exposure for YES Prep!”

The exhibition will be on view until Labor Day.  Be sure to visit the Cockrell Butterfly Center this summer and enjoy the art by YES Prep Fine Arts students.
