May 18, 2011 by Jeremy Jones

2011 ronald mcdonald house charities and HACER scholarship winners from yes prepOn Friday, May 13th, Ronald McDonald House Charities hosted its annual awards banquet for its 2011 HACER Scholarship Program. We are proud to announce that Jessica Mendoza of YES Prep Southeast and Waldi Flores of YES Prep Southwest were two of the 24 scholarship winners selected by the Houston chapter of RMHC/HACER. They will receive a one-time scholarship in the amount of $2,000 and a netbook. Jessica and Waldi participated in the awards banquet and shared their future college plans with several notable Latino members of the Houston community who were also in attendance. Jessica will attend Grinnell College and seeks to become a surgeon. Waldi will attend Boston University this fall in his pursuit of becoming a CEO. In their brief speech, they also expressed gratitude for the support received from their parents, teachers, school directors, college counselors and close friends. The room was filled with several of Houston’s promising leaders and these two students fit right in.

The purpose of the HACER scholarship is to provide financial assistance to eligible graduating high school seniors who face limited access to educational and career opportunities. Students are selected and awards are distributed based on demonstrated academic achievement, financial need and community involvement. The RMHC/HACER scholarship has become one of the largest college scholarship programs for Hispanic students. Since its inception, nearly 14,000 Hispanic students have been awarded more than $20 million in scholarships to support their college education.

Congratulations, Jessica and Waldi! We’re lovin’ it.
