A Monday morning for the seniors and college counselors in the last weeks of April and heading into May can bring stress. This was not the case for three YES Prep Southeast seniors who were able to sneak away from campus for a few hours for a great reason – to be honored by the Assistance League of Houston as scholarship recipients for the 2011 school year.
YES Prep and ALH began their partnership three years ago and have awarded over $94,000 to 76 graduating seniors from YES Prep. Representing 18 total scholarship recipients awarded between $1,000-$2,000 this year, Olga Hernandez, Veronica Martinez and Ulises Mercado attended the yearly ALH Scholarship Breakfast to receive this great honor and reward of their hard work.
Below is a little more information about each of the students and their accomplishments both inside and outside of the classroom.
Olga Hernandez is a senior at YES Prep Southeast. In the fall, she will attend Midwestern State University where she plans to major in Criminal Justice. During her time at YES Prep, Olga has participated in numerous sports including soccer and softball. Most recently, she also served as a shooting guard for the Lady Wizards Junior Varsity basketball team.
Veronica Martinez is a senior at YES Prep Southeast. This fall, she will attend St. Mary’s University of San Antonio where she plans to major in Psychology. Veronica has been a very active part of the YES Prep Southeast community. She is currently the senior class Vice President and serves as a YES Student Ambassador. She is also a member of the Senior Prom planning committee and the YES Prep Dance Company.
Ulises Mercado is a senior at YES Prep Southeast. In the fall, he will attend the University of Houston where he plans to major in Kinesiology. Ulises is a power forward for the Wizards Varsity basketball team and has also served as a personal fitness trainer at Fitness Connection.
