Teacher Feature: Antonio Castillo of YES Prep Southwest

For the past ten years, 100% of YES Prep's graduating seniors have been accepted to top colleges and universities across the country.  The success of our students is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, a group of individuals from diverse academic and professional backgrounds united by a sense of frustration at the status quo.  We believe that teachers are the single greatest factor determining student achievement.  In our weekly series, the Teacher Feature, we hope to show off our greatest resource: our teachers.

Antonio Castillo

• Born and raised in Houston, Texas
• Graduated from Rice University in 2009 with a degree in Earth Science
• Teaches Freshman Seminar and 7th grade science at YES Prep Southwest

What is your favorite thing about working at YES Prep?

My favorite thing is that I am making a positive difference in kids’ lives every single day I am here. There are no off days when influencing a child. And the fact that everyone who works here feels the same way, makes it just the more enjoyable being an employee at this wonderful place.

Do you have any interesting talents, interests or accomplishments that you want to share?

Well I was definitely blessed with the ability to sing. I love music and singing. Music is something that captivates me and I can enjoy listening to almost any genre.

What is your favorite Houston thing?

I love my city. I continue to explore new things to do here. One thing though, is that I really like trying new places to eat. We seem to have a lot of eateries around here.

What does college ready mean to you?

College ready means that kids are not only academically prepared, but are also emotionally and socially prepared for college as well. A student needs to be well-rounded in all facets to be ready for what college life brings to them.
