For the past ten years, 100% of YES Prep's graduating seniors have been accepted to top colleges and universities across the country. The success of our students is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, a group of individuals from diverse academic and professional backgrounds united by a sense of frustration at the status quo. We believe that teachers are the single greatest factor determining student achievement. In our weekly series, the Teacher Feature, we hope to show off our greatest resource: our teachers.
Andria Groover
I grew up in Mérida, Yucatán, México. I am originally from Houston, but moved to the Yucatan peninsula when I was 9 years old when my dad felt called to be a missionary.
I attended Texas A&M University! Whoop! I graduated in 2008 with a double major in Spanish and Communication.
I teach Spanish 1, Intro to Hispanic Studies (for 6thgraders) and Colt Camp (a student leadership organization that serves the freshmen class at NC).
What is your favorite thing about teaching at YES Prep?
My favorite thing about working at YES Prep is the amazing people I get to collaborate with everyday. I am so thankful for the opportunity to create personal connections with our students and be present for their social, academic and emotional growth. All the teachers are united by the same mission, bringing social justice to Houston. I love feeling the energy and drive my colleagues bring to our work, for example when we are brainstorming about how to effectively provide our students with opportunities that otherwise would not exist. Working as a team with these passionate people, for the most deserving students, makes closing the achievement gap the only job I could ever imagine doing!
