Ashley Harris began her career as an Assistant Buyer for a major retailer in the D.C. area but quickly realized her heart was in education. After two years in the private sector, she returned to her hometown of Houston, Texas and became a teacher by joining Teach For America. She taught in the Houston Independent School District for four years before joining YES Prep Public Schools as an Instructional Coach in 2007. Currently, Harris is the Senior Instructional Coach at YES Prep. Her primary responsibilities include developing novice teachers through one-on-one coaching and creating and facilitating sessions on instructional strategies. These efforts directly impact YES Prep's commitment to providing quality teachers in every classroom. It is this commitment that supports YES Prep's mission of sending 100% of graduating seniors to four year colleges which they have done for the past decade.
In her role as Senior Instructional Coach, she leads the in-house professional development and provides differentiated one-on-one support for the Instructional Coaching Team. Harris collaborated with the Director of Teacher Development at YES Prep to create and facilitate sessions for the inaugural Coaching Institute for Instructional Leadership which was attended by teacher leaders and administrators across the organization. In addition, she works closely with the Manager of the Teaching Excellence Alternative Certification Program (ACP) to ensure quality professional development opportunities for teachers from YES Prep and KIPP Houston seeking certification. Teaching Excellence ACP is the first state-approved alternative certification program housed by a Charter Management Organization in the state of Texas.
Harris graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 2001 with a B.A. in Plan II Honors and a B.S. in Marketing. Hook em’ horns! She holds a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of Houston. Harris resides in Houston, Texas with her husband Neal and three children.
