How YES Prep is becoming the best place in the country to grow as an educational leader

September 01, 2010 by Bill Durbin

YES Prep Public Schoolsstrives to be the best place in the nation to develop and support educational leaders.  To this end, we have developed three key leadership development opportunities.  First, we have implemented a Leadership Cohort Training Model that meets three times throughout the year to discuss and practice goal-setting, team development, meeting facilitation, and prioritization of competing demands.  This cohort is for new team leaders with roles such as grade level chair, dean of students, dean of instruction, student support counselor, content specialist, course leader, or operations manager.  Eighty of YES Prep’s current leaders attended the two-day introduction session this summer, and they will receive another day in the fall and one in spring.  These follow-up days will be used to review previously-set goals, reinforce effective team meeting facilitation, and reflection on leadership performance throughout the year.

The second leadership opportunity is our Leading Excellence Days.  These days are tailored to individuals who are interested in school leadership, such as dean, principal, or school director.  During these one-day simulation activities, participants receive feedback from 8-10 current YES Prep leaders on leadership experiences that are common to the position.  Participants have quality face-face time with YES Prep leadership, learn more about their current strengths and growth areas as a leader, and understand better the rigors of the positions they one day hope to manage.

The third leadership opportunity is geared towards recruiting strong leaders to YES Prep from other organizations.  We believe that it is a privilege to lead at a YES Prep school, and we want to bring in new perspectives and talent to the organization in a way that allows them to learn the culture thoughtfully and support school-level programs at the same time.  We call this experience The Leading Excellence Fellowship.  The Leading Excellence Fellowship is an intensive one-year training and professional development program for aspiring school leaders.  During this time, Fellows have the opportunity to visit eight high-performing YES Prep campuses to learn the culture and academic program that makes the YES Prep system one of the best in America.  In addition, Fellows are able to identify their strengths and growth areas, tailor a professional development and work experience to best facilitate their personal growth, and complete specific action projects at various YES Prep schools as a means to “give back” to the host schools.

At the end of the one-year fellowship, the goal is that Leading Excellence Fellows are prepared to take on a school-level leadership position in the following year, and that they have developed the foundation necessary to run a YES Prep school in the future.
