I recently read an article about a school system spending 12 months preparing their teachers for the classroom. Although there were definitely merits to this program, the reality is that we need to get top quality teachers into classrooms now. A year, even a semester, is just not fast enough to meet the demands of ensuring that 100% of our students are College Ready. As YES Prep continues to grow, the need for well prepared dedicated educators also increases. The Teaching Excellence Program meets the increasing demand for quality instruction by way if its ability to initiate, support, and develop teachers new to the profession. Where this teacher preparation and alternative certification program (ACP) stands out among the rest is in its ability to prepare novice teachers for the classroom in just 10 days.
Basing its pre service training on the developmental needs of beginning teachers and utilizing the various strengths and talents of its Instructional Coaching team and YES Prep Content Leaders, Teaching Excellence is able to hone in on “need to know” information and strategies and successfully create connections and relevance to these tools for teachers new to the profession. How is this possible in only 10 days? Strategic and focused professional learning sessions inclusive of content specific samples, student stories of struggles and successes, and a plethora of classroom videos make the elements of quality instruction vivid for the novice teachers. Paired with real time classroom observations followed by facilitated debriefs and instructional support during structured lesson planning clinics, these tools equip the newest members of the profession for a successful start on day one of instruction. New teachers leave Teaching Excellence Induction prepared to provide quality instruction to their students and ready to take the first steps in transforming Houston.
