We just confirmed that Alberto Gonzales will be delivering this year’s keynote remarks to our seniors at our Senior Signing Day Celebration being held at Rice University’s Tudor Field House on Friday, April 29, 2011. This year promises to be a great one . . . we will have THREE classes of seniors announcing their college plans.
Alberto Gonzalez is a native Houstonian who grew up poor on the Northside, graduated from Rice University, and went on to hold a cabinet level position in President’s Bush’s (43rd) Adminsitration. He will continue the great tradition we established last year in having Education Secretary Arne Duncan as our first-ever SSD speaker. One side note is that General Gonzales actually has spoken and addressed the seniors this past fall during the Senior Summit event we held – he was so impressed with the students and YES Prep that when given the opportunity to return and hear/see where the seniors will be declaring, he readily accepted our offer.
Here’s some additional info on General Gonzales about his background and life:
Appointed the 80th Attorney General of the United States, Alberto Gonzales became the first Hispanic to lead the nation’s largest law enforcement agency. In 1994, he was named general counsel to then-Texas Governor George W. Bush, rising to become Secretary of State of Texas in 1997 and finally to be named to the Texas Supreme Court in 1999.
A native Texan, Gonzales was raised in a household that personified the core American values of hard work, personal initiative, dedication to family and perseverance in the face of adversity. One of eight children, he lived in the house built by his father and two uncles. He served in the United States Air Force and attended the United States Air Force Academy. A graduate of Rice University and Harvard Law School, he was the only family member to go to college. Gonzales was born in San Antonio and raised in Houston. He and his wife, Rebecca Turner Gonzales, have three sons and currently live in Lubbock, Texas.
