YES Prep applauds the Houston ISD School Board who voted to put students above teachers. Last Thursday, HISD has approved the launch of a two-year pilot program for 10-15 low-performing schools to have an extended school year calendar starting this fall. Additionally, teachers at the schools who are selected for the pilot program may have to re-apply for their job to make sure that these schools have great instruction.
We believe that YES Prep has greatly influenced HISD to pilot an extended school year and challenge the teachers who serve at the selected campuses.YES Prep has had an extended school year since our charter was formed in 1998 and believe that more time with students improves their academic performance. However, it is not time alone that improves student achievement. The extra time must be with high-performing teachers who are great at their job.
See YES Prep's impact on HISD in the the Houston Chronicle story, HISD pilot program would extend school year, and watch CW-39 segement, Hot Topics Rouse HISD Meeting. Should HISD extend the school year? Is the pilot a good idea? How do you feel about teachers re-applying for their positions. Comment and let us know what you think!
