Oprah Winfrey is full of surprises and for the students and staff of YES Prep Schools, it was a pleasant one.

The talk show host and entertainment mogul has a long tradition of bearing gifts and on Monday, the surprise gift came in the form of a $1 million check.

The oversized check was presented to YES representatives during a broadcast several weeks ago, but aired Monday afternoon.

YES Prep is a public, open-enrollment charter school system which serves low income students on eight campuses throughout the Houston area, including a site location on the corner of Shaver Street and Crenshaw Road.

YES, which stands for Youth Engaged in Service, was established 10 years ago and has been ranked as the best public school in Houston by Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report magazines.

The Oprah connection is part of an education special on Winfrey’s show, which will feature guests like Bill Gates, musician John Legend, Washington, D.C., Chancellor Michelle Rhee and David Guggenheim, who directed an upcoming documentary on the public school system in the United States entitled, “Waiting for Superman.”

Also on hand during the taping were YES Prep founder and CEO Chris Barbic and Melanie Singleton, a teacher and former student.
