YES Prep has always ensured that our students are staying occupied in quality summer activities that allow them to explore new opportunities and build their leadership skills. Here is a sample of what YES Prep Southeast students are up to this summer!
Twenty four students will be attending a three week Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program) enrichment program this summer and for these programs they have received over $63,000 in scholarship money. Our students will be attending programs at Duke, University of Kansas, University of Georgia, Texas A&M, Trinity University, Georgia O’Keefe’s former ranch in New Mexico and Appalachian State University. One eleventh grader, Ayari Cruz, landed a spot in the coveted film program at Chapman University. Tenth graders attending are: Juan Cabrera, Daniel Mendoza and Jose Pena. Ninth graders include: Franklin Alvarez, Judith Andrade, Giovanni Barron, Daniella Chavero, Marco Cortes, Delvia Gomez, Paloma Mendoza, Jaquelin Ortuno and Ashley Rincon. Eight grade students are: Guadalupe Bustamante and Suzette Martinez. Ten seventh graders are taking flight: Valeria Alvarado, Amber Anguiano, Giselle Barron, Karla Garza, Jonathan Lozano, Jose Meza, Emily Mora, Oscar Perales and Aisha Rivera. Jorge Penado are going to Vanderbilt to their talented and gifted program.
Alison Higuera landed three scholarships for 8th graders Michael Alatorre, Kevin Rodriguez and Victor Aguilar and chaperone and former YES student, Francisco Guzman to attend the U. S. Space camp in Huntsville, Alabama. Jennifer Sandoval and Magdaly Herrera will be attending one of my personal favorites, Cottonwood Gulch, where they will study environmental science and archeology. Joselyn Guevara and Kathryn Ortega will attend a pre-college program at Texas Lutheran University. Kaylee Trevino, Samantha Marquez (senior) and Elsih Escoto will be studying in Korea; Connie Flores will be doing community service in Costa Rica and Alexia Sanchez will spend six weeks in Turkey. Natalie Peraza, Michael Leon and Amanda Lopez will study voice with Houston Grand Opera. Lauren Ortega will be a camper at Camp Olympia. Jesse Delgado and Enrique Banda will be building wind turbines at Texas Tech University. Carrington Ransfer will spend a month in the wilderness with NOLS while Ricardo Lara, Adrian Turcios and Misael DeLeon travel to Colorado or Utah with Outward Bound. Nadine Salazar, Patricia Villanueva and Yahaira Becerra will become business experts at Rice Business Institute.
