Are We An Exemplary School District for a Second Year in a Row?

August 20, 2010 by Chris Barbic

The Answer is YES!!!

It is official.  The Texas Education Agency accountability ratings have been released and YES Prep Public Schools has earned its way into a very elite group for the second year in a row. . . . we are an Exemplary school system!  To earn this rating, at least 90 percent of our students had to pass the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), 95 percent of our high school students either graduated on time or continued high school for a fifth year, and we had an annual middle school dropout rate of 1.8 percent or less.  With the recent addition of the Texas Projection Measure or (TPM) a campus or district  could earn an Exemplary or Recognized rating by meeting the absolute standards or by using the Texas Projection Measure (TPM) or exceptions.  Special measures can only be used to move up one rating category.

So let’s put this accomplishment in proper context . . .  of 1,237 school districts across Texas, 239 earned an Exemplary rating, but out of the 239 Exemplary districts, only 72 districts earned this rating by meeting the absolute standard with 90 percent of students passing the TAKS.  YES Prep is in that elite group of 72 putting us in the top 6% of the highest performing school systems in the entire State!  Incredible!  Congratulations everyone!  Below are the individual rankings for each campus from the Texas Education Agency website.

This success is another tribute to the hard working students, staff, and parents across YES Prep. It is always a great feeling when our individual and collective efforts lead to student achievement result like those outlined above.  I want all of us to take immense pride knowing that we have created and are working in an organization that continues to lead, continues to get better as we grow, and continues to provide powerful examples of what is possible for low-income students, thousands of them, across Houston.

YES Prep's goal is to build on these results and begin thinking Beyond TAKS and push ourselves to lead the State in our AP scores, our SAT results, our percentage of students requiring remediation in college, and our college persistence rates.  While we have accomplished so much, we have so much more to do in order to ensure our kids can complete college, return to Houston, and transform Houston.
