Alumni Spotlight: Mark Medina Jr., YES Prep Southeast Class of 2006

December 01, 2011 by Tenesha Villanueva

yes prep alumnus and marine corps lance corporal mark medinaMark Anthony Medina, Jr. graduated from YES Prep Southeast in 2006.  Mark has been a proud member of the United States Marine Corps for 2 years where he currently serves as a Data Networking Specialist and is stationed at Camp Pendleton in California.

Mark on his experience at YES Prep…

What is your favorite YES Prep memory?

My favorite memories at YES Prep were always in the dance room. My participation in the dance program greatly enhanced my experience at YES Prep.  The one that stands out the most is when I broke the mirror during a late night rehearsal.

Name the teacher/staff member who had the greatest impact on you and why.

The staff member that had the biggest impact on my life was Ms. Lisa Castillo, our dance instructor. She saw my potential as a dancer and invested much time and dedication into helping me improve my skills.  With her motivation and support, both at school and outside, I was able accomplish many things personally and within the community.

How do you feel YES Prep best ensured you were ready for life beyond high school?

The rigorous academic environment and level of structure helped me develop a strong work that has helped me excel in the Marine Corps. Essentially, my experience at YES Prep ensured I entered the Corps on a level above the rest.

Knowing what you know now, what one piece of advice would you give to current YES Prep students?

Find an interest or hobby at YES Prep that is not related to academics.  Developing your non-academic passion will help you manage the stressful work load you receive as a “YESer” throughout the year.

Mark on his experience in the military…

Why did you decide to join the military?

I joined the Marine Corps because it was the best way to support my family.  I also feel that protecting our country is the greatest honor one can have bestowed on them.

What do you consider to be the greatest benefits and challenges to being in the military?

The benefits of the military will differ depending on the person you ask. For me, the health benefits are significant in to ensuring my family is healthy and taken care of.  The training I have received has also increased my skills and will help keep me alive.

One of my greatest challenges will be my upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.  There are so many hidden factors that can result in life or death situations for me or my fellow Marines; staying sharp and focused is going to be the challenge.

Tell us about your job.

I am a Data Networking Specialist. My job is to build and maintain networks to provide communications between troops on the ground and those back in the states.  As a result of my experience, I have gained valuable knowledge and skills I will be able to use in the civilian world to make a good living for my family.

List key qualities or characteristics that have helped you achieve success in the military?

Strong leadership skills, a “do or die” mentality, and a strong work ethic have all helped me achieve success in the Marine Corps.

What do you consider to be your proudest moments in the military?

There have been a few big moments in my military career thus far. I was able to perform for General Colin Powell and other dignitaries in a Youth Conference on improving the quality of life for America’s youth.  I also had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Alma Powell (General Powell’s wife) about my contribution to improving conditions for America’s youth. Shortly after I joined the Marine Corps, I had the opportunity to do a dance performance and speech in front of former First Lady, Laura Bush, and a live audience.

Other proud moments include being placed in charge of tracking essential gear critical to the Marine Corps and saving a Sailor’s life from a horrible accident.

Describe your life now.  What are your plans after you leave or retire from the military?

My life now is pretty much the same. I continue to dance, I continue to teach, and as for plans after the Marine Corps- that is still up in the air.

Is there any other information you feel should be highlighted in your spotlight?

I am the proud father of 2 beautiful children, Makayla (1 ½ years old) and Branden (turning 4 in December).
