The YES Prep Fine Arts 3rd Annual Visual Arts exhibition, 1,000 Words: Literacy and Art, opens next Wednesday, November 16th at the Houston Public Library – Central Location (Downtown). The exhibition is on view until Saturday, December 31.

1,000 Words: Literacy and Artincludes art by 6th through 12th grade students from YES Prep Public Schools. Middle school and high school students from YES Prep Brays Oaks, East End, Gulfton, North Central, Southeast, and Southwest participated in this visual arts exhibition. To coincide with the art exhibition being held at the Houston Public Library, students created art through a variety of mediums that relates to literacy. The young artists learned about artists that integrate text and connect to literacy in their work, and they explored different aspects of literacy through their own art.
“My art relates to the book, The Glass Menagerie. My art represents Laura and how she was such a timid person, and my art shows the cocoon as a representation of how she blossomed into a young woman,” said Cynthia Gibson, an 11th grade artist from YES Prep Southeast (11th Grade).
The exhibition is on view until Saturday, December 31. The opening event is on Thursday, November 17th from 6:00 – 7:30 pm on the 1st Floor near the Houston Public Library’s (Central Location) art gallery. The event is free and open to the public. Come view the student art, experience musical performances by students from YES Prep West, and enjoy light refreshments.
